Rosemarie Badier Carter of Westhampton Beach died on January 5 at the East End Hospice Kanas Center for Hospice Care on Quiogue. She was 93.

She was born March 7, 1928 in Dijon, France, to a German mother and French father. She was taken as an infant to Germany to be raised by relatives. She remained there until August 1938, when being of mixed heritage was a danger, and she was taken to Lyon, France, to live with her parents. At age 22, Rosemarie, Mimi to her friends, came to New York and soon after to Westhampton Beach while working as governess for a local family. Here she met and married her husband, Allen L. Carter, in 1951.

Carter, known for her strict attitude and quick wit, was truly adored and respected by those who knew her, according to her family. She was generous with her many talents and created beautiful gifts which she had knit, crocheted, quilted or painted. Her beautiful flower and vegetable gardens were also a great love of hers, they said. Carter’s baked goods were eagerly anticipated by family and friends and she truly enjoyed hosting family dinners and larger events, too.

In 1976, she was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She spent hundreds of hours over the years sharing her faith with many in the community.

She is survived by a sister, Elisabeth (Charles) Tobon of Dix Hills; daughters Chantal (Merrill d. 2018) Ryder and Cherie (Patrick) Magee; her grandchildren, Sheri Bardot Wowk, Brett (Jenny) Ryder, Alexis Ryder, Moriah Magee, and Joseph (Meghan) Magee; and great-grandchildren, Monroe Wowk, Dylan Carter, Olivia Phillips, Mila Ryder, Emily Magee, Joseph Magee Jr., Clark Magee and Thea Magee.

She was predeceased by her son Claude in 1979; her husband Allen Carter in 1998; and grandson David Carter in 2020.

Zoom Services were held January 15. A gathering to celebrate her life will be held in the spring.

Dangerous Liberty

With the Fourth of July on deck, and the national “No Kings” protests occurring recently, it’s worth taking a moment, in partisan times, to remind ourselves that dissent is patriotic, and protest is a core American principle. You might well disagree with what’s being said, depending on which group is protesting, or who is in power to face the protests. But the act of civil protest is a healthy part of democracy, and in fact is essential to its survival. And it’s hardly new.
