Rosie Stewart
Rosie Stewart of Southampton died on April 22 at the Hamptons Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing. She was 96.
Born in Eureka, Georgia, the delayed midwife registration recorded her date of birth as December 1, 1916. Her parents, John and Eula Griffin Buckner, guided her education through the Eureka School District. After graduation, she moved to the East End of Long Island, where she married William Stewart, who predeceased her. The couple had no children, but Ms. Stewart was known for her devotion to God. Her prayer life was the source of inspiration for many.
She worked at the Peck & Peck Women’s Clothing Store on Jobs Lane. When she was not working in the store, she ministered in any capacity at churches across the East End and beyond, including Calvary Baptist Church in East Hampton, First Church of God in Christ in Bridgehampton, Padgett’s Temple Church of God in Christ in Southampton, St. Paul’s Community Church in Riverhead and the United Evangelistic Church in Philadelphia, where she was director of the Women’s Department from 1979 to 2006.
Having lived to see a changing social landscape, from the Jim Crow South to the Civil Rights Movement, she was easily moved by the plight of others. She took many into her home to care for them and teach them the ways of God.
Ms. Stewart was predeceased by her siblings, Sam Buckner, Lillian Clarke, Robert Green, John Buckner Jr. and Arthur Bucker; many nieces and nephews; cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews, and godchildren.
A funeral service was held on April 29 at King’s Chapel Church of God in Christ with the Bishop Frank A. White officiating. Interment was at Southampton Cemetery. Acting as pallbearers were Earl Baxter, LaMar Bell, Jonathan, Joshua and Julian Pressley and Richard Short.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.
