Dr. Russell Philip Cancellieri, son of the late Dr. Carmelo and Dorothy Cancellieri, died on December 8, while surrounded by his loved ones. He was 73.

Cancellieri has been a prominent physician, practicing pediatrics and allergy/immunology in the Southampton community for over 35 years, and concluding his professional time with the U.S. Army at Winn Army Hospital, at Fort Stewart, in Hinesville, Georgia.

While raising their children, Cancellieri enjoyed volunteering his time across many activities, such as coaching youth soccer, assisting with the Cub Scout and Boy Scout programs; and many years performing with, and supporting the local community arts programs, most notably with the Danse Arts ballet company in their many productions over 25 years.

Cancellieri was also an avid student of American history, and spent more than 10 years as a living historian with the NY Provincial Militia, Terry’s Company, French and Indian War re-enactment group, along with his son and daughter.

Outside of his activities, he preferred to be home with his family and many dogs, enjoying a quieter pace. Over the span of his life, he cared for hundreds of people and affected the lives of countless others in the community. He will be missed and remembered by many, especially his family, who will miss him most of all, his family said.

He was predeceased by his son Kevin. He is survived by his wife, Francisca; his son Brian; daughter Megan (Callahan); and his grandchildren, Finn and Charlotte Cancellieri, and Harper, Lily, Piper and Adleigh Callahan; his sister Patricia Depew.

Visitation was held on Monday, December 13, at the O’Connell-Rothwell Funeral Home in Southampton. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, December 14, at the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary RC Church in Southampton. Interment followed at Sacred Hearts Cemetery in Southampton.

In lieu of flowers, his family asks that donations be made in his memory to National Great Pyrenees Rescue in Beacon, New York (nationalpyr.org).

Dangerous Liberty

With the Fourth of July on deck, and the national “No Kings” protests occurring recently, it’s worth taking a moment, in partisan times, to remind ourselves that dissent is patriotic, and protest is a core American principle. You might well disagree with what’s being said, depending on which group is protesting, or who is in power to face the protests. But the act of civil protest is a healthy part of democracy, and in fact is essential to its survival. And it’s hardly new. The Center for the Study of the American Constitution, a nonprofit, nonpartisan center based at the ... 25 Jun 2025 by Editorial Board
