Ruth Schlatt lived to be 95 years of age and was a long term resident of Westhampton Care Center. She acquired a serious illness that caused her much pain and was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center on Friday, August 11th in Riverhead. Upon arrival, she received immediate and excellent care by the Doctors and staff. As her illness was considerable and chances of recovery were nill. Her previous written wishes were to never be placed on life support. To be merciful, the family and I decided to place her on end of life comfort care. She passed away quietly and without pain on Monday, August 14th, from complications of pneumonia and sepsis.
Ruth was born, Ruth Dodd Grummon in Baltimore, Maryland on January 21st, 1928 to Josiah Dodd Grummon and Gertrude Irene O’Gorman Grumman. She grew up near the George Washington Bridge on 181st Street, and Riverside drive, in NYC with her older sister, Gertrude and brothers, Josiah and William. She attended elementary and what they called “Finishing School” at that time. She wrote a considerable amount of poetry at a very young age which I hope to publish soon. NYC is were she met Eugene Mann Schlatt, a Merchant Marine, fell in love and was married on May 9th,1949.
After marrying, Eugene and Ruth moved out to Long Island to a few different areas and had 3 children along the way. While in Riverhead, she taught Sunday School for many years at the Grace Church on Roanoke Avenue. Later, after moving near the Shinnecock canal in Hampton Bays, Ruth did secretarial work for Adam’s & Peck Stock Exchange and Crockett Real Estate. She then became involved in leadership with the 4H Clubs and Brownie/Girl Scout organizations.. Years later, about 1967, the family moved to Hampton Road, Roses Grove in Southampton and resided there for many years. While in the food service industry, many will remember her for the years she worked at the coffee shop at Southampton Hospital. She became a widow on July 11, 1989. She continued to work well into her 80’s. She was an elegant swimmer, and excellent seamstress.
She is survived by her three daughters, Dorothy Brown, Denise Terry and Erica Mckee; Six Grandchildren, Adriene Miller, Kirk Warner, James Terry, Jessica Terry, Corinna Magee, Jacqueline Brown, Nine Great Grandchildren and Two Great-Great Grandchildren. One day, at a very young age, a friend of her daughter’s, in humor, nicknamed her “General Ruth” and that title seemed to stick throughout her life. She was definitely a unique and unforgettable character.
,A service at Calverton National Cemetery, August 17th at 2:00 PM was arranged with care and compassion by Brockett Funeral Home, Southampton, and prayers officiated by a long time friend and Pastor, Richard King. She will be buried next to her husband, Eugene, as they are united once again.
I wish to thank all who have helped her in the past at the Westhampton Care Center, the absolute incredible doctors and staff and PBMC for the care given, not only to her but to our family, and to Brockett Funeral Home for all they’ve done with compassion to expedite the arrangements under unique circumstances. In remembrance of Ruth, she would have loved if you donate to your favorite charity. Thank you from the entire family!
