Ruth Holcomb
Ruth Holcomb of East Hampton died at Southampton Hospital on April 24. She was 82.
She was born in Manhattan on September 22, 1930. She was the daughter of Joseph and Edith Shanck and grew up in New York City and also lived in Westport, Connecticut, before moving to East Hampton. There, she lived with her husband of 62 years, Ralph, who survives her.
She attended Hunter College and Brooklyn College and was a model with the Candy Jones Agency. Throughout her life, she was an active volunteer, most recently as a corporate fundraiser for UNICEF, traveling most recently to Turkey and Scandinavia.
She was president of the Parent Teachers Association of P.S. 125 in Manhattan and was instrumental in getting P.S. 36 built to help ease overcrowding in New York City schools.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children, Laurie Holcomb Bullock of Massachusetts, Robin Gerstein of Carmel, Susan Holcomb of California, and Allan Havey of California; and five grandchildren.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton. A private memorial will be held at a later date in Manhattan. Memorial donations may be made to UNICEF at www.unicefusa.org.
