Ruth Owens Mahoney
Ruth Owens Mahoney of Southampton and New Smyrna Beach, Florida, died on Wednesday, October 3, at the Hamptons Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Southampton. She was 95, and owned the Todd Nursing Home in Southampton.
Born on March 9, 1917, in Utica, Ms. Mahoney was the daughter of John H. Owens and Beatrice Hughes Owens, and grew up on a dairy farm in New Hartford, just outside Utica. After graduating from nursing school in Utica, she began a long and distinguished career in nursing and nursing home administration. She was director of nursing at Terrace Heights Hospital in Queens and, in 1956, she fulfilled a long held ambition to go into business for herself. She and her husband moved to Southampton and opened the Todd Nursing Home on Hill Street. In 1967, they relocated the home to Meeting House Lane.
Throughout the years, Ms. Mahoney prided herself on leading a staff that gave outstanding and compassionate care to their patients. In 1983, the nursing home was bought by Southampton Hospital. Mr. and Ms. Mahoney then spent their retirement between New Smyrna Beach and Southampton.
Ms. Mahoney was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, George R. Mahoney, and by a brother, Roscoe Owens. She is survived by two sons, George Jr. and his wife Linda of North Carolina, and Donald and his wife Maureen of Southampton; five grandchildren, Kirsten and her husband Dave, Scott and his wife Annie, Eric, Neil and Donald Jr.; and a great-grandson, Brayden.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, October 13, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Hearts Cemetery in Southampton. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.
