Safeguard the Future

Regarding the article on September 10, about Poxabogue Field [“Fate of Southampton Town-Owned Poxabogue Field, Within Sagaponack Village, Is Debated at Town Board Meeting,” 27east.com, September 10]:

Most people care about the environment and understand how essential natural resources are for water quality and maintaining wildlife diversity, to support our ecosystems (and us). Changing the designated status of Poxabogue Field into open land makes sense, as it aligns with many of the area’s environmental objectives.

We do need food from farms, and, in 1987, the vision for a farm made sense. However, today we face significant water pollution issues, loss of wildlife and climate change, as well as knowledge of all the environmental scientific facts that point toward protection rather than depletion.

Poxabogue Field is located near critical undeveloped wetlands, and it serves as a buffer to safeguard Poxabogue Pond and the varied wildlife that inhabits it. As you know, most of the other open fields surrounding the area are mostly conventional farmland, or over-fertilized and pesticide-laden giant lawns with little protection for our wildlife and water quality.

Please consider water quality, our fragile ecosystem, and the numerous studies linking ecosystem decline with loss of biodiversity and poor water quality.

We need to restore wetlands to safeguard ourselves and future generations. Please read the Dragonfly Day resolution passed by the New York State Legislature; it was written by conservationists from the leading organizations in New York.

We need to protect ecosystems and wetland areas.
