Even though it was by invitation only, Sag Harbor Village has canceled a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the completion of a $4.3 million renovation of Long Wharf that was to have taken place on Saturday afternoon.

“It was getting too big and out of hand, and we felt that [it is] better to do nothing than do something that would be putting the village in danger,” Mayor Kathleen Mulcahy said in an email on Thursday afternoon.

The village had planned the low-key affair, in large part for an archival video of the project, Ms. Mulcahy said earlier this week. But the invitation-only event began to attract attention when a post advertising a concert by two popular bands, The Lone Sharks and the Hoo Doo Loungers, appeared on Facebook.

The concerts, part of a series sponsored this summer by WLNG radio, were going to be held on Long Wharf but instead have been moved Marine Park, where social distancing guidelines will be enforced.
