A Riverhead man was arrested and charged with a felony count of assault after Riverhead Town Police say he intentionally drove his vehicle into a motorcycle operated by a Sag Harbor man, who is in critical condition at Stony Brook University Hospital as a result.
Police said Tyryk Lewis, 28, drove his Jeep into a Honda motorcycle driven by Michael McCann, 60, shortly before 7 p.m. on Friday night. Lewis was traveling east on Old Country Road, between Ostrander Avenue and Oliver Street in Riverhead.
Police said McCann was airlifted to Stony Brook Hospital by a Suffolk County Police helicopter and remained in critical condition on Saturday.
Police said Lewis and McCann were “involved in an ongoing dispute” when the incident occurred. He is charged with second-degree assault, a felony.
A passenger in Lewis’s vehicle, Rita Stumpf, 39, an undomiciled woman from the Riverhead area, also was taken into custody and charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree after being found to be in possession of crack cocaine, police said.
The Riverhead Police Detective Squad is continuing the investigation with assistance from the New York State Police accident reconstruction team.
