Sag Harbor Village Mayor Kathleen Mulcahy on Friday signed an executive order limiting vehicle parking on Main Street to 30 minutes for the duration of the Memorial Day weekend in order to promote social distancing in the village.
The restriction will be in place between 6 a.m. and 4 a.m., on both sides of Main Street from Spring Street to Bay Street. Drivers would face a fine if cited for parking for longer than 30 minutes.
Noting that the village is a popular tourist destination on holiday weekends, the mayor states in the order that “the anticipated influx of visitors, seasonal renters, and second homeowners to celebrate the Memorial Day Holiday this coming weekend is expected to cause significant congestion within the Village by significantly increasing its population.”
The congregation of people and vehicles on Main Street could “hamper the effective use of social distancing measures required by CDC Guidelines to help prevent the transmission of the Covid-19 virus,” the order states.
According to the order, the mayor consulted with the chief of police, Austin J. McGuire, and the two agreed that the 30-minute limit would help visitors to the business district maintain effective social distancing.
Emergency vehicles are excluded from the restrictions.
The order is set to expire in five days, unless renewed by the mayor.
