The Sag Harbor School Board on Monday discussed what could happen if the district taxpayers fail to approve the proposed $31.5 million budget for the 2010-2011 school year.
The board could either put forth a revised budget, which could include a variety of spending cuts and would be voted on by residents on June 15, or adopt a contingency budget, which would cut $1.65 million from the current budget.
School Board member Dan Hartnett said that those cuts would most likely be in music, art, foreign languages and sports programs, and from the math and English departments. Librarian and guidance counselor positions could also be jeopardized, he said.
The proposed budget includes an approximately 12.8-percent tax hike for Southampton Town residents and a 10-percent increase for those in East Hampton Town.
If the budget fails on May 18, the School Board will meet to discuss its options on May 20. President Walter Wilcoxen said the board would most likely put a revised budget up for a vote.
