Sag Harbor summer resident Mary D. Schaefer died at Glen Cove Hospital on Sunday, December 15. She was 93.
Born on October 14, 1920, in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of Melbourne and Mary Lucas. The family moved to Oceanside in 1926 and she graduated from Oceanside High School.
During World War II, Ms. Schaefer worked in retail in Hempstead. On her 25th birthday, she married John E. Schaefer, who died last year on April 13. They lived in Rockville Centre before moving to Brookville in the 1960s. Ms. Schaefer was a founding member of St. Paul the Apostle Roman Catholic Church there.
In 1960, the couple purchased a home in Noyac, and they became very involved in the Noyac community and were founding members of the Noyac Golf Club. They also had a home in Hillsboro Beach, Florida.
Ms. Schaefer devoted her life to creating a home for her family and enjoyed gardening and her dogs.
She is survived by three sons, Robert of Rockville Centre, James of Brookville and John of East Quogue; a daughter, Mary Stabenfelt of California; four siblings; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held at St. Paul the Apostle Church on December 17. Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery.
