Salvatore A. DeCarlo D.M.D. of Southampton died on February 28, 2017. He was 101.

Dr. DeCarlo was born in White Plains, on August 21, 1915. He graduated Tufts University Dental School in 1941. In 1943 he volunteered for service in the U.S. Army and was stationed on Okinawa as a captain in the Medical Corps. After the war he toured Japan with the occupation forces. He practiced dentistry for 30 years before retiring to a cottage he hand built in 1950 with lumber secured from a deconstructed barrack at Fort Stewart, Georgia. Dr. DeCarlo’s community service included membership in the Lions Club, the Knights of Columbus and the Sons of Italy. As a member of the Southampton Golf Club since 1964, he passionately enjoyed his favorite sport and was able to play the game until the age of 99, still walking the course.

With his wife Ruth, who predeceased him in 2008, he donated 3,500 hours of volunteer work at the Southampton Hospital Thrift Shop. He became an iconic fixture at Catena’s Market, his favorite hangout, where he spent his last years trading stories and gossip with his many friends.

Survivors said Dr. DeCarlo was known as an affable gentleman and loved by many, adding that his death “marks the end of an era in American History characterized as being ‘The Greatest Generation.’”

He is survived by three children Alan Nicholas, Margaret Jean, Lawrence Arthur; and a granddaughter, Kendall.

A military burial service will be held at a later date at the Calverton National Cemetery.

Turkeys Delivered!

On behalf of the Mariners Patriot Club, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the many community partners whose generosity made this year’s “250 Turkeys for 250 Veterans” initiative a tremendous success. Because of the remarkable support we received, the Mariners Patriot Club and community volunteers were able to deliver 250 turkeys to veterans throughout the Town of Southampton, to Shinnecock Nation veterans and the Westhampton Beach Air Force Base, 106th Rescue Wing. We are deeply grateful to LICARES, Regan Kiembock, Schmidt’s Country Market, the Southampton Village PBA, the Southampton Town PBA, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, Deputy ... by Staff Writer

Lack of Empathy

This unfortunate Afghani accused in the attack on National Guard members in Washington, D.C.: Did they check him for PTSD and brain damage from being near explosions? These are proving to be real issues that lead to impulsive and destructive behavior. If we the invaders recognize this in ourselves, how much worse is it for people who are trying to directly defend themselves and their families … and to deal with the destruction of their country? The lack of empathy is incomprehensible. We will now forbid entry to any from “third world” countries. Guess where the greatest possible economic and ... by Staff Writer

Respect the Process

As a member of The Southampton Association, I applaud its goal of “inform[ing] homeowners of issues affecting the general welfare of Southampton Village.” Unfortunately, a recent email to its members regarding the Gin Lane plantings does the opposite. The association’s email stated, “While there has been some last-minute discussion over the process, the Lake Agawam Conservancy received approval from the [Department of Environmental Conservation] and the Village Board and followed all the requirements as then in place.” Leave aside that the discussion was “last-minute” only because there was never any presentation of the landscaping/planting plan to the public; I and ... by Staff Writer

The Real Hoax

It’s a good thing that Congressman Nick LaLota wasn’t conducting a town hall when he penned “Position Unchanged” [Letters, December 4] claiming that he was always all for releasing the Epstein files. Otherwise, it might have been hard to keep a straight face while stating, “It is wrong to claim that President Donald Trump has resisted transparency.” LaLota did, in fact, vote “yes” on a bill to force the Justice Department to release the files — but that was after he declined to join other lawmakers in the discharge petition that forced the vote. LaLota also reportedly remained concerned that ... by Staff Writer

Just the Facts

First, I want to thank Congressman Nick LaLota for taking the time to respond to my letter published on November 27 [“Position Unchanged,” Letters, December 4]. Second, the congressman characterizes my letter as “partisan,” but I didn’t criticize him because he is Republican. It was only because the congressman felt it necessary to find out something about me that he regarded as negative that my political donations found their way into the congressman’s reply. I remain concerned with the following irrefutable facts: The congressman did not sign the discharge petition, without which the vote on the floor of the House ... by Staff Writer

Try Again?

Once again, East Quogue residents find themselves at the mercy of “outsiders” whose interests may not align with theirs. Whether it be The Hills, stripped of all developer-proposed amenities beneficial to East Quogue; a plan for an unnecessary convenience store/gas station complex in the middle of town; or now an ill-conceived scheme to build a condominium complex at the Dockers site, one of the most scenic bay-side stretches of Dune Road — crucial decisions about East Quogue that more rightly belong to local residents most affected are again being made by officials of the Town of Southampton whose agendas and ... by Staff Writer

'Brazen and Notorious' Drug Depot Was Run by Elderly Riverside Man From His Home, District Attorney Says

Southampton Town Police have arrested an elderly Riverside man who they say was running a “walk-up” drug distribution business out of his house on Old Riverhead Road. John Woods, 83, was arrested by officers of the East End Drug Task Force last Friday, December 5, and charged with two felony drug possession charges. He was arraigned in Southampton Town Justice Court, but the charges will be referred to the Suffolk County district attorney’s office to seek a felony indictment in county criminal court. Police say they had been getting numerous complaints from residents of his neighborhood about drug use on ... by Staff Writer
