The East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton girls track team had one of its better showings at the Suffolk County Class B Championships at Kings Park High School on Thursday, May 25. The Bonackers accrued 40 points to place fifth out of the 13 teams that were able to score points.
The girls were led by a pair of seniors, Pierson’s Meredith Spolarich, who was county champion in the pentathlon, and Bridgehampton senior Leslie Samuel, who won the county title in the long jump.
Spolarich won the pentathlon by totaling 2,615 points, nearly 200 points ahead of Sayville sophomore Carly Strining. She won three of the five events, including the high jump (1.52 meters), shot put (8.78 meters) and long jump (4.78 meters). And in the other two events, she placed second in both the 100-meter hurdles (18.29 seconds) and the 800-meter run (2:40.95).
Samuel won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet 4 inches. She also placed second in the 200-meter dash in 25.83, just two-tenths of a second behind Islip freshman Imani Hood.
East Hampton freshman Kaili Moore was the last of the girls to earn All-County honors by placing third in the shot put with a throw of 30 feet ¼ inch. She also threw the discus 74 feet 7 inches to finish 15th. East Hampton junior Ryleigh O’Donnell just missed being All-County in the 400-meter dash by placing fourth in 1:01.46. Dylan Cashin placed sixth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:44.01. East Hampton freshman Leah McCarron finished sixth in the discus with an 84-foot throw. She also ran in the 100-meter dash and finished 12th in 13.61 seconds.
The girls 4x100-meter relay team finished seventh in 52.80 seconds. Rebecca Trowbridge, a junior, competed in both throwing events, finishing eighth in the discus with a throw of 83 feet 3 inches and she finished 17th in the shot put with a throw of 21 feet 4 inches.
East Hampton head coach Yani Cuesta said she expects Spolarich, Samuel, O’Donnell and Cashin to all make it to the state qualifier, which is this Thursday and Friday, June 1 and 2, at Comsewogue High School.
The East Hampton boys team only had a handful of athletes at counties last week, two of whom competed in the 1,600-meter race. Brayan Rivera, a junior, finished 11th in 4:50.63, while sophomore teammate Benson Edman finished 15th in 5:03.49. Sophomore Wyatt Smith cleared 5 feet 3 inches in the high jump to tie Rocky Point senior Jack Norrby for 11th place. The boys also ran in the 4x400-meter relay, which finished eighth in 3:49.87.
