Planting A Dream

Broccoli likes it cool; so do all the traditional fall crops. In too much heat, these hearty varieties “bolt” — go to flower — or, worse, they rot. In fall, the shortening days, the diminishing heat, generally causes growth to slow. And, yet, October was feeling like June: hot, humid. Tomatoes just keep coming. Things I thought I may have planted or transplanted too late are getting big enough to harvest. So, I am strangely grateful for the warmth, unstable as it is, weird as it is. It is hard not to note the whiff of opportunity in a longer ... 19 Oct 2021 by Marilee Foster

A New Season Upon Us

When I see the rows of bright yellow school buses in military formation waiting to pick up and deliver young passengers, I know we are in a new season. A page has been turned, like the leaves that will soon turn their fall colors of burnt orange, sienna and gold. The buses look like giant bugs with their black windscreen eyes. I never took the bus; I took the subway during my four years at Girls’ High. The exception being when I sprained my ankle playing basketball, and my friend Liz drove me to and from school. My first day ... 18 Oct 2021 by Joanne Pateman

The Big Race

The contest for district attorney is the leading race in Suffolk County this year. In a county with a long record of governmental corruption, and with such major criminal issues as illegal drug dealing and, in recent years, the murderous activities of the MS-13 gang, the position of DA is highly important — indeed, some in Suffolk County politics have termed it the most important position in all of county government. This year, running on the Democratic ticket for DA is the incumbent, Timothy Sini of Babylon, who was elected in 2017 and took office in 2018. He is opposed ... by Karl Grossman

Land Of Abundance

Now that the city has largely left the countryside, we who live here experience a cool, calmness settle. So the calm, we note, perhaps it’s a touch of seasonal melancholy, invites the fog, both morning and night, bookending each day. A fall fog is not the same as a summer fog. In summer, a fog is solid and can erase all distant things. The fog in autumn is often not complete but stands like a pond, a cloud I cannot see through, in the middle of a field. Sagaponack is so named for its large “ground nuts.” A food plant ... 12 Oct 2021 by Marilee Foster

We Have Liftoff

A few weeks ago, I did the craziest thing: Over 12 days, I flew 6,375 miles and drove 1,912 miles. I flew from New York to Seattle with one of the hockey pucks and a cat. I stayed for five days and helped that hockey puck and the cat move into an apartment. Then I flew to Washington, D.C., where I met two more hockey pucks. I stayed one night, left one hockey puck at their recently rented apartment, then drove for three days with the other hockey puck to Denver, Colorado, and helped this puck move into their new ... by Tracy Grathwohl

A Tiny Weapon?

The U.S. House of Representatives has just passed a measure calling for a federal investigation into any link between the “possible weaponization of ticks” by the U.S. military and Lyme disease. Several books and articles have found that there is such a link — and have pointed to activities on Plum Island, a mile and a half off Long Island’s Orient Point. Lyme disease is named for Old Lyme, Connecticut, 10 miles from Plum Island, where it was first identified. The sponsor of the measure is Representative Chris Smith, a Republican in his 21st term in the House and considered ... by Karl Grossman
