Jillian Stellato’s seventh grade science class at Pierson Middle School has been studying states of matter and phase change. On January 28, in anticipation of the expected weekend's blizzard, the students made ice cream for a hands-on demonstration of phase change, thermal energy and freezing point depression.

They also made predictions on whether there will be six more weeks of winter based on the groundhog seeing his shadow.

First-place trophies were awarded to fourth-grader Addison Cinelli and Prep 7 student Lucy Tillotson. Olivia Caruso and Alessandra Paccasassi took second, with Edward Cabrera-Brooks and Ruby Boeding in third.
