To inspire students to read throughout the summer, Southampton School District
Superintendent Dr. Fatima Morrell kicked off a new Superintendent’s Summer Reading
Program on June 23 on the steps of Southampton Elementary School.
During the kickoff, Dr. Morrell, along with Southampton Village Mayor William
Manger Jr., read “I’m Gonna Like Me” by Jamie Lee Curtis and drummed up support for the
new reading program. Students in kindergarten through eighth grade can participate in the program by reading and logging books to win prizes including bicycles, roller skates, beach toys, movie tickets and gift cards. As part of the day, local law enforcement officers visited the school and spoke to students about the different kinds of police jobs, including those related to the SWAT team, K-9 unit and helicopter unit.
