In honor of Black History Month, Westhampton Beach Elementary School students are learning about influential African Americans through a variety of activities sponsored by the school’s Equity Committee. Students created Instagram posts that featured influential African Americans. Their work, which included short messages about the person they chose and a corresponding picture, is displayed outside their classrooms. Additionally, members of the school’s student council created a tree display, "Rooted and Grounded in Black History," on a bulletin board in the school’s main hallway that features information about influential African Americans. As part of Heart Health Month in February, Bridgehampton School Union Free School District students in grades eight through 12 participated in the American Heart Association's challenge. Students who completed “Finn’s Mission” were taught hands-on CPR, the warning signs of a stroke, and the dangers of vaping and tobacco use on your health. The upperclassmen were then paired up with elementary classes to teach them heart-healthy activities like jumping rope, hula hoops, basketball drills and exercises. Family and Consumer Science teacher, Jenna Pluta said, "It’s truly special getting to see our upperclassmen step into leadership roles and teach our elementary students who look up to them. It’s great to see everyone having fun together while also getting their heart rate pumping." COURTESY BRIDGEHAMPTON SCHOOL DISTRICT
