Hampton Bays High School sophomore Willem Sarkis was selected to perform in the
High School Honor Band at the New York State Band Directors Association
Symposium in Syracuse this March.
Sarkis, who plays the bassoon, earned the honor based on his performance at the
New York State School Music Association Solo Evaluation Festival last spring.
Sarkis has been playing the bassoon since the fifth grade. He performs on the
instrument in his school’s band and plays the saxophone in the jazz band. When not
performing, Sarkis participates in his school’s Interact Club and Peer Educators Program.

Southampton Elementary School hosted its annual second grade Thanksgiving gathering on November 21. The event focused on family and community, with students performing songs, sharing a Thanksgiving poem and enjoying food with their families. Also, during the event, representatives from the Shinnecock Indian Nation spoke about their traditions related to giving thanks, performed a traditional dance and song with students and gave a blessing. The Southampton School District recently hosted an informative My Brother’s Keeper Community Summit. The event featured guest speaker Dr. Anael Alston, New York State assistant commissioner, Office of Access, Equity and Community Engagement Services.
Dr. Alston provided inspiration to attendees to make a change for the better. My Brother’s
Keeper, launched by former president Barack Obama, is dedicated to helping all young

Tuttle Avenue School first graders participated in a Thanksgiving celebration, which recognized and honored all essential workers in their school along with the veterans and active military in their community. It was a morning of poetry and song as each of the grade’s classrooms donned turkey and pilgrim headdresses and took to the stage to perform a variety of Thanksgiving holiday music and to recognize the important work that the faculty and staff do each day.      The school also collectively donated nonperishable food items for those in need during the holiday.
