To kick off National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, 22 members of the Southampton Intermediate School National Junior Honor Society recently participated in the North Fork Breast Health Coalition’s annual 5k Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness at the Tanger Outlet Center in Riverhead. The students, along with their advisers Mei-Lynn Guerrero and Kristen Minter, were recognized as the top youth fundraising group. They plan to continue to raise funds during the month of October. Westhampton Beach High School students recently spent their lunch periods creating yarn pumpkins that will be delivered to the residents of the Westhampton Care Center. The community service project is part of a collaboration between the high school and the Westhampton Free Library. Each month, the library brings a new community service project to the high school for students to take part in. To welcome fall, second graders at Hampton Bays Elementary School learned about the life cycle and parts of an apple. The students then showcased what they had learned by using construction paper to depict the stages of an apple’s life. As part of a schoolwide initiative, students can shop at the store using in-house currency called “Mariner money,” which is earned by modeling safe, respectful and responsible behavior at school.
