Southampton High School creative arts students, including Terrell Terry Jr., kicked off the school year by diving into a weaving project that combined hands-on craftsmanship with lessons in global culture and history. As part of the project, the students studied the work of El Anatsui, one of the most highly acclaimed artists in African history, who uses weaving to bring his community together and raise awareness of the epidemics affecting his homeland. They also explored the cultural significance of weaving in Latin American traditions, where woven textiles are not only used for clothing and housewares, but also serve as a source of income, a means of self-expression and a way to honor ancestral beliefs.
