Peconic, the wayward gray seal pup found in the Riverside traffic circle on Sunday, was released at Tiana Beach in Hampton Bays on Friday morning, April 8.

The male pup was found wandering the streets in the traffic circle, where he was seen by Southampton Town Police, who immediately called the New York Marine Rescue Center’s (NYMRC) 24-hour hotline.

Southampton Town Police stayed with the seal until NYMRC staff arrived on scene. The seal was brought back to the NYMRC facility in Riverhead, where he received a full exam and fluids and was approved for release by the senior veterinarian.

Southampton Town Police Officer David Santora, who was on the scene on Sunday, did the honors of releasing Peconic on Friday with the NYMRC.

Rescue Program Director Maxine Montello said, “The NYMRC staff are so thrilled that this animal has been cleared for release after a short period of time at the NYMRC and is ready to head back home.”
