The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is offering a series of hikes to observe wintering seals at Montauk Point State Park. Beginning this month and continuing through April 2025, a State Park naturalist will lead visitors on a scenic beach walk to an area where up to five species of seals may be observed. Along the hike, there will be opportunities to see many winter birds and to explore marine geology. Binoculars are helpful.
Hikers should meet at the office/restroom building in the lower parking lot 10 minutes before the start time. Clothing appropriate for the weather and comfortable shoes for hiking are suggested. The hike takes about two hours and is about three miles long. Dogs and strollers are not permitted.
To make the required reservation, call the office at Montauk Downs, 631-668-5000 (ext. 0) or reserve online by searching “Montauk Point Seal Hike” at eventbrite.com. The cost is $4 per person (cash only).
Upcoming dates are Saturday, November 16, at 1 p.m., Sunday, November 17, at 2 p.m., Saturday, November 30, at noon. Additional dates are listed on eventbrite.
