Vincent D. Calenda of Quogue died at his home in Quogue on January 2, 2017. He was 76.

Mr. Calenda was born in 1940 to Vincent and Dorothy Calenda, who predeceased him. Although orphaned at the age of 4, Mr. Calenda remained in New York City with family, attending a private elementary school, followed by high school at Loyola School in New York City, where he developed an interest in business and finance. He went on to study business administration at Columbia University, graduating with honors and a Bachelor of Science degree. His graduate studies led him to Columbia School of Arts and Sciences, graduating again with honors and a Master of Business Administration degree.

Mr. Calenda served as a U.S. Marine from 1960 through 1963 and was discharged with honors.

He found a passion for marketing and was employed by Young & Rubicam Inc., based in Manhattan, until relocating to Quogue, his year-round residence since the early 90s. His love for Quogue was only matched by his love of the “Shelby Cobra” and his rose gardens, survivors said. He could be often found in the Tap Room of The Inn at Quogue where he met his wife, Theresa, who survives him. The couple were married in 2015 at the Quogue Chapel; a simple ceremony was followed with a private reception at the Quogue Club at Hallock House, where he was a member with his wife.

Mr. Calenda’s wish was that his memorial be held at his home on his 77th birthday, July 22, 2017. Friends, family and associates are invited to attend this Saturday, from 7 to 9 p.m. at his home, 11 Willow Lane.

Interment will be at the Quogue Cemetery.

Pity the poor horseshoe crab. It is, without question, a survivor almost beyond compare. Consider this: There are fossils of the creature dating back 445 million years. Dinosaurs arrived about 200 million to 250 million years ago — which means the time between us and dinosaurs is equal to the time between dinosaurs and the earliest horseshoe crabs. And they’re still here, nearly unchanged. But they finally may have met their match. The American horseshoe crab has “vulnerable” status, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The population faces a whole series of challenges, including sea-level rise, coupled ... by Editorial Board
