A schematic showing how the proposed settlement of the lawsuits over the Picnic Area would limit vehicles on the beach. Only 136 vehicles would be allowed on the beach at any one time during the day in summer, and they would be divided into six blocks of between 10 and 48 vehicles, parked end to end in two rows, with no-vehicle buffer zones between them to allow homeowners to access the beach in front of their houses with having to sit between vehicles.

The settlement agreement for the Picnic Area use by 4x4 vehicles creates six parking blocks with between 10 and 48 vehicles each and no-vehicle buffer areas around the beach access from the homes beyond the dunes.

Suffolk County Water Authority Backs Off No-Watering Request, but Urges Customers To Limit Water Use

The Suffolk County Water Authority, which last week urged its customers to refrain from lawn watering and other high-use activities due to drought conditions and strains on the water supply system, has eased off on those requests. Although the Stage 1 Water Alert announced July 23 remains in effect, SCWA, in an email to customers on Tuesday, August 19, announced that water supply conditions had eased. “Thanks to the conservation efforts of our customers, conditions have begun to improve since we issued our Stage 1 Water Alert,” SCWA stated. “We are grateful for the steps taken to reduce usage during ... 20 Aug 2025 by Stephen J. SCWA To Receive Settlement From 3M Company in 'Forever Chemical' Lawsuit

The Suffolk County Water Authority has announced that it would receive its first payment as part of a nationwide class-action lawsuit against the 3M Company, a manufacturer of PFAS, which are often referred to as “forever chemicals,” because they do not break down over time. The chemicals have polluted Long Island’s sole-source aquifer, and SCWA will receive part of a $10.5 billion settlement involving thousands of water providers across the country. SCWA expects an initial payment of $34 million, about 20 percent of the $170 million it will receive in total from the settlement. Although the settlement is an important ... 23 Jul 2025 by Stephen J. Kotz
