Our unfortunate congressman, Lee Zeldin, has continued to show a poor grasp of the spirit of democracy.
In the immediate aftermath of the shocking and historically shameful attempted putsch of 1/6/21, Lee made sure to add his votes — not once but twice — in favor of objecting to state electoral ballots that went to Joe Biden.
Why, Lee? Only hours after your colleagues in office were crawling on the floor, in fear of their lives, as rampaging looters desecrated our most hallowed ground of democracy, why did you feel it necessary to further the attempt to subvert the will of the people? Violent overthrow in support of a dangerous, delusional and utterly unfit leader was not enough for you? You had to make sure to put your personal stamp of approval on that despicable movement?
That’s great, Lee, just great. But it’s not your personal stamp.
You are acting, poorly, as the representative of the entire congressional district, and have in effect added our assent and support to the outrage that occurred. This is intolerable.
None of this came as a surprise. We’ve all been watching this train wreck come down the track for months. So you’ve known exactly what you were encouraging. I feel strongly that you have shamed our district by your decisions, and brought disrepute to your name.
I haven’t yet heard your reasons for making the votes you did. Let’s not forget your earlier support of the baseless Texas lawsuit to subvert the election. I’m still curious to hear them. Because, for the life of me, I can’t see any way to justify supporting a man and a movement hellbent on tearing down the democracy that until recently lit the way for the entire world.
I hope we can once again regain that stature. But with people like Lee Zeldin in power, I worry.
