Hakamé. Greetings from Shinnecock.
With such a big weekend behind us, it’s hard to believe that an even bigger weekend lies ahead. There is so much going on that we gave some thought to hiring a personal assistant just to keep us on our toes, but due to the economy, decided it would be more fiscally appropriate to just pull out the old pen and calendar.
The kickoff to the weekend begins with an opening reception on Thursday, July 9, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., for the Shinnecock Nation Cultural Center and Museum’s first ever art show, featuring (how perfect), our very own Shinnecock youth. The “Shinnecock Youth Art Show” will feature paintings, drawings, and photography made by Shinnecock children in grades kindergarten through 12 throughout the school year. The work will remain on display throughout the museum’s Strawberry Moon Harvest Festival, taking place on Saturday, July 11, and Sunday, July 12.
Open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., both days, the family event will feature everything from a marketplace of Native arts, crafts and jewelry to a Kids Zone with face painting, necklace beading, shell painting, scavenger hunts and more. There will also be traditional dancing and music, summer foods and strawberry dishes, and animals from the Quogue Wildlife Refuge.
On Friday, the Shinnecock Presbyterian Church will hold its inaugural “Shinnecock Evening Under the Stars Gala” from 7 to 10 p.m., outside, on the powwow grounds. The evening will feature a buffet dinner, raffles and dancing to the music of a live band. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the gate. For more information, contact Shavonne Smith or Viola Cause at 630-6325 or Ray Clendenin Jr. at 283-6143.
The Setalcott Nation will hold its Corn Festival-Powwow this weekend, July 11 and July 12, at the Main Street School in Setauket. Gates will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, to feature craft and food vendors, storytelling, drumming, “The Salinas Family” Azteca Dancers and more. Grand entry will be at 1 on both days and the host drum will be the Nimham Mountain Singers.
Tony Moon Hawk Langhorn will serve as arena director, Dennis Owl Red Moon will be the lead male and Night Eagle, the lead lady.
The Cole Brothers Circus will grace our good grounds on Monday, July 13, and Tuesday, July 14, with a 5 p.m. and an 8 p.m. show each day. In addition to elephants, camels, dogs and a comedy mule, the shows will feature aerial ballet, a human cannonball, a seven man pyramid on the high wire and more. Early attendees will be offered camel rides, pony rides and face painting. Tickets are $17 for adults and $12 for children. Call (888) 332-5200 or visit GoToTheCircus.com for more information. Tribal members should call the tribal office at 283-6143 for more information on reserved tickets.
As organized by Walter “Buddy” Jackson, director of the Hampton Bays Historical Society, Miss Elizabeth “Chee Chee” Haile, will offer a lecture, “Shinnecock Nation Speaks,” on the history and customs of the Shinnecocks on Tuesday, July 14, at 7 p.m., at the Hampton Bays Public Library. Chee Chee, an Elder of the Shinnecock Nation, serves as a member of the Hampton Bays Historical & Preservation Society Cemetery Task Force, a volunteer group that focuses on the preservation of the three town-owned cemeteries that the Historical Society of Hampton Bays maintains. For more information, call Beth White, at 728-0887.
Regretfully, we must end on a solemn note. Our dear Ronald Quinn, 52, died on Sunday after a long illness. A wake will be held today, Thursday, July 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton. Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Friday, July 10, at Shinnecock Presbyterian Church, followed by interment at Shinnecock Cemetery. He will be dearly missed.
