Hakamé!

Greetings from Shinnecock.

Sometimes you can just look at someone’s face and tell what a sweet, kind and loving soul it encompasses—that is what we will miss about Daryl Irene Lee, who departed from us on New Year’s Eve. The Lee family traveled up to Stamford, Connecticut, this past Saturday to bid adieu to our dear friend and sister. For those who never crossed her path, a photo of her beaming smile is evidence that the world has become a shade bleaker without her. We ask that the Creator bless her journey home and comfort her family during this sad time.

The Shinnecock Early Learning Day Care Center Planning Project has officially unveiled the winners of the logo and naming contest. While we have been getting used to the name Wuneechanunk (which means “Our Children of the Stony Shores”) Shinnecock Preschool, which was submitted by Tina Tarrant, we finally have a logo to accompany the name. Shinnecock artist and co-owner of Evitan Couture fashions, Jason King, was selected as the winner of the contest for his vivid interpretation of a number of images representative of Shinnecock. The logo incorporates wickiups, the water at sunset, shells on the seashore, and whale tails playfully poking out of the water to reflect our history and everlasting connection to the sea. Turtles walk in the foreground in homage to our creation story and children dressed in traditional clothing represent the young minds we have yet to inspire.

The Wuneechanunk Shinnecock Preschool project staff will soon be creating a website to improve fundraising efforts in aid of the school’s completion. In the meantime, donations and fundraising ideas are welcome and encouraged. E-mail hakame@aol.com or randalllauryn@yahoo.com for more information.

This Friday, January 13, from 6 to 10 p.m., Evolution Fitness will host a launch party for its newly added spa, Spa Evolution with Nicole Aldrich. Despite the date, the only thing scary about an evening of complimentary wine, hors d’oeuvres and music by DJ Rah-G-Raj is the amount of fun we are sure to have! So put on you fanciest Adidas track suit, or your best dress and come out for a good time at Evolution Fitness.

Then, for those who are still up for a night out, Conversations with the Living will be holding a fundraiser reception on Saturday, January 14, from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Harlem Landmark Guest House in Manhattan. An evening of art and humanitarianism, the evening will consist of a screening of the trailer for “Conversations with the Living,” a film about the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Haiti and the selfless group of individuals that dedicate their lives to saving lives. Plus, there will be a silent art auction and raffles, as well as complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres, all for a minimum suggested donation of $25 per person. All proceeds go toward the completion of the film and its mission to educate and inspire awareness and global support for the ongoing HIV/AIDS crisis.

Lastly, once again we would like to remind Tribal citizens that Tribal Council elections are coming up on January 28, and six seats need to be filled. So far, very few potential candidates have picked up a petition, which are due in the Tribal Office by Friday, January 20. Anyone interested in running for Tribal Council must be an enrolled member of the tribe, at least 21 years of age, and must have resided on the Shinnecock Reservation for at least six months. For more information, contact the Tribal Office or the Election Committee Chair Susan Soto at rezcat59@hotmail.com.

Dear Neighbor

Congratulations on your new windows. They certainly are big. They certainly are see-through. You must be thrilled with the way they removed even more of that wall and replaced it with glass. It must make it easier to see what is going on in your house even when the internet is down. And security is everything. Which explains the windows. Nothing will make you feel more secure than imagining yourself looking over the rear-yard setback from these massive sheets of structural glass. Staring at the wall has well-known deleterious impact, and windows the size of movie screens are the bold ... 11 Dec 2025 by Marilee Foster

I Can Dish It Out

Our basement looks like the final scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” where the (found) ark is crated and wheeled into the middle of a government warehouse with stacked crates going on for miles. In other words, we have a lot of stuff. This tracks. Mr. Hockey and I have been married for 36 (according to my calculator) years. We’ve had four (no calculator needed) pucks. We’ve lived in seven (according to my fingers) different homes in three (no calculator or fingers needed) countries. In 2010, we moved back to East Hampton full time. We brought everything we had ... by Tracy Grathwohl

Potential Disaster

It’s back — the federal government’s push to expand offshore oil drilling. The waters off Long Island are not in the plan, as of now. As the recent headline in Newsday reported: “Plan for New Oil Drilling Off Fla. and Calif. Coasts.” The subhead on the Associated Press article: “States push back as Trump seeks to expand production.” The following day, November 22, Newsday ran a nationally syndicated cartoon by Paul Dukinsky depicting President Trump declaring in front of a line of offshore wind turbines: “Wind Turbines Ruin the View!” Then there was Trump in front of a bunch of ... 10 Dec 2025 by Karl Grossman

White House Confidential

There has been some consternation expressed about changes that the Trump administration is making to the White House, including the East Wing demolition, paving over the Rose Garden, and plans for a grand ballroom. Let’s put some historical perspective on this: The first president to occupy the White House, John Adams, did so 225 years ago last month, and the building and grounds have been undergoing change ever since. Construction of the White House had begun during George Washington’s first term — specifically, at noon on October 13, 1792, with the laying of the cornerstone. The main residence and foundations ... 4 Dec 2025 by Tom Clavin
