Almost exactly three years after first breaking ground on a new facility, members of the Southampton Volunteer Ambulance Corps, along with many other community members and local lawmakers, celebrated the grand opening of the new, 8,600-square-foot ambulance headquarters on North Sea Road in Southampton on Sunday at an open house event.

The move to the new facility, which is essentially double the size of the old ambulance barn and sits on the property next door, represents a new era for the department. The much larger facility not only replaces the 40-year-old structure next door, but adds much needed updates, like showers, bunk rooms and separate offices and meeting rooms for both the volunteers and the paid paramedics and EMTs on staff.

New and expansive meeting rooms, with updated audio/visual technology, will allow the ambulance corps to host meetings and community events without having to move the ambulances outside of the bays and into the parking lot just to make space.

Philip Cammann has been a member of the department since 1980. He recalled last week, ahead of the open house, how, in 1989, the ambulance corps had a total of 27 members, and ran about 350 calls. He said that “the vast majority of the sweat equity” that went into putting up the old building was done by the members.

A lot has changed since then.

Southampton Volunteer Ambulance has one of the largest territories in the region, and is one of the busiest agencies for trauma response in the area. It’s the largest service area in Southampton Town and the second-largest in Suffolk County, covering Shinnecock Territory, Shinnecock Hills, Tuckahoe, North Sea and Water Mill.

Currently, the department includes 72 people between employees and volunteers, and responds to around 1,200 calls annually, according to Cammann.

Now, the department has a facility that fits its membership and the needs of the volunteers, EMTs and paramedics. The new building will provide a boost for people living in and around the Southampton Ambulance District in other ways as well. Cammann pointed out that, with much more space in the new building, they will be hosting the Suffolk County EMT courses for the East End, and will also start hosting CPR classes and “Stop the Bleed” training for the community.
