It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas, especially after such a festive display as the annual Parade of Lights and Tree Lighting ceremony that so many people came out to witness last weekend. But after this weekend I don’t think anyone can deny that the holiday season has started because we have more events going on than you can shake a bell at.One of the first events to get going will be the annual Christmas bazaar hosted by the First Presbyterian Church of Southampton. Starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, December 3, the church will host holiday-themed arts and crafts by local craftspeople and will offer breakfast and refreshments during the early hours. Later that day, Southampton Country Holiday and the Southampton Chamber of Commerce will host its annual “It’s a Wonderful Village” holiday stroll and shopping special. All are invited to stop by the village for a leisurely walk to take in the atmosphere and see the village all decked out for the season. Local shops and restaurants will be open with seasonal deals; carolers will be singing; and hot chocolate and other refreshments will be served. Horse and buggy rides will be available to take around Agawam Park and through the village from 1 to 4 p.m., and Santa Claus himself will make a visit from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. More information can be found by calling the chamber at 631-283-0402 or visit southamptonchamber.com.

Human Resources of the Hamptons and The Southampton Food Pantry were joined last week by local chefs to create and cook soups that will be available for the homeless or the needy during this holiday season. Allan Wyse of Wyse Organics and Jack Formica, a private chef, stopped by The Southampton Food Pantry to cook 350 quarts of soup. Included in the recipes is a Thai Butternut and Grain soup, which sources locally ground butternut squash. Also on the menu is a Venison and Power Green Stew, which is made with locally sourced venison, and a nutritious blend of cabbage, kale and collard greens. We thank you all for your efforts and good will.

Holidays aside, we give a big congratulations to the Southampton Historical Museum, which earlier this month was awarded a $50,500 matching grant from the Gardiner Foundation. The funds received will go toward the restoration of the Red Creek Schoolhouse, located on the grounds of the Rogers Mansion Museum Complex, which traces its history back to the 1830s. Originally built in Hampton Bays in the historic neighborhood of Red Creek, the schoolhouse was constructed to educate and house the students of shipbuilders local to that area. As the shipbuilding industry declined, the community of Red Creek dispersed, and the schoolhouse remained in disuse until it was moved to the Village of Southampton in 1953. An amazing grant for an amazing piece of history.

At The Library

Financial services professional Craig J. Ferrantino will discuss the ins and outs of Social Security and the specific changes recently made by Congress on Thursday, December 1, at 5:30 p.m. at Rogers Memorial Library in Southampton. Admission is free.

Local residents Jeannette Downes and Ellen Bialo will lead an Armchair Traveler discussion of their journey from Hanoi in northern Vietnam to Ho Chi Minh City in the south on Monday, December 5, at 5:30 p.m. The two will be joined by their trip guide Sandy Colony. Admission is free.

Best-selling author and journalist Tom Clavin will discuss his recent co-authored book “Lucky 666: The Impossible Mission,” a great untold story of World War II history, on Thursday, December 8, at 1 p.m. Admission is free.

Gail Pudaloff, an exercise and kinetic therapist, will offer a program titled “Posture/Balance/Movement: A Pre-Holiday Workshop,” to explore how postures can affect moods and breathing, on Friday, December 9, at 10:15 a.m. Admission is free.
