Nicole Meringola, of Southampton, graduated from Quinnipiac University on Saturday, May 9, with a master’s degree in occupational therapy. In addition to her diploma, Nicole was also presented with the Academic Excellence Award in Health Sciences, in recognition of her achieving a 4.0 GPA. As part of her graduation requirement, Nicole will be completing two additional clinical experiences on the East End before pursuing employment in the area.Nicole graduated from Southampton High School in 2010 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Quinnipiac last year. This past Saturday, May 30, Cindy Willis and Christl Meszkat, of the Southampton Garden Club, worked on sprucing up planters at Southampton Hospital with spring flowers. Other garden club members worked on planting projects at the Fresh Air Home and the Rogers Memorial Library. Interested in donating to the garden club’s efforts? Mark your calendars! Kerri Christensen of Southampton was named to the President’s List at SUNY Canton for the spring 2015 semester. Kerri is a management major and graduated from Southampton High School in 2010. In order to be named to the President’s List, students must earn a GPA of at least 3.75 or higher. Congratulations, Kerri!

On Saturday, May 23, Southampton High School alumni Alina Gaias earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Bowdoin College, which is located in Brunswick, Maine. Alina graduated from Southampton in 2011. Congratulations, Alina!
Southampton Hospital and Pharmacist Bob Grisnik of Southrifty Drug on Jagger Lane in Southampton Village recently collaborated on a new project that will offer the free and safe disposal of needles and other medical “sharps” in a specially designed container, which has been installed at the drugstore.
These items are often disposed of in household garbage and may wind up as litter in the environment, creating a dangerous situation for people and pets. East End residents are encouraged to take advantage of this free service, joining the Hospital and Southrifty Drug in protecting the environment.
Southampton High School teacher Greg Metzger and students David Nichols and Alec Giufurta will host a pizza and movie fundraiser on Friday, June 5, at 5:30 p.m. at the high school. Refreshments will be sold and part I of “Legacy Tales” will screen. Proceeds will benefit their work on shark migration and shark DNA research projects. Fox news analyst and bestselling author Ralph Peters will visit the Rogers Memorial Library on Thursday, June 4, at 5:30 p.m. Mr. Peters will sign and distribute complimentary copies of “Cain at Gettysburg.” A reception will follow.
The Friends of the Rogers Memorial Library will offer a concert by pianist Anne Taffelon Sunday, June 7, at 3 p.m. She will perform works by Schubert, Chopin, Liszt and several of Earl Wild’s transcriptions of Gershwin tunes.
Howard Oboler will discuss the life and work of Charlie Chaplin at the library on Monday, June 8, at 2 p.m.

Two local immigration lawyers, Christopher Worth and Mitchell Zwaik, will be at the library, in the Cooper Hall board room, on Monday, June 8, at 7 p.m., to offer an informative session on President Obama’s recent executive action on immigration. The presentation will be in Spanish and English.
Don Longo will offer an hour-long talk about “Verbal Judo,” ways to deal with difficult situations by focusing on demeanor, language, and tone on Thursday, June 11, at 5:30 p.m. Mr. Longo is a retired police officer and Licensed Private Investigator who has worked and trained with members of the FBI, Secret Service, and Diplomatic Security Service.
The Friends of the Library will offer an afternoon concert by pianist Dalia Lazar, on Sunday, June 14, at 3 p.m. She will perform a program of Beethoven sonatas, including the Moonlight, the Pathetique, and Les Adieux.
