A Southampton man was killed Saturday afternoon when the motorcycle he was driving struck a tree on Deerfield Road between Water Mill and Noyac at about 2:15 p.m., according to Southampton Town Police.

Jason M. Malak, 54, of Southampton was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police said that when officers arrived at the scene of the crash, they found that Mr. Malak’s 2017 Kawasaki Motorcycle had crashed into a tree and determined that he had been thrown from the bike. The cause of the accident remains under investigation, police said.

An eyewitness reported that he was northbound on Deerfield Road and that he and another motorist came upon the accident before emergency service personnel had arrived. He said a motorcycle, still smoking, was wedged into some trees on the east side of the road, and its rider was lying in a driveway. He said debris was scattered across the road. He said he called 911 and left the scene when police arrived.

Members of the Bridgehampton Fire Department’s ambulance company responded, and fire police blocked the road at Little Noyac Path and were directing southbound traffic to that road. Northbound traffic was also blocked just south of the wreck, which occurred near 1959 Deerfield Road.

Shortly before 4 p.m. New York State Troopers replaced the fire department volunteers at the road block.

Anyone with information regarding the accident are asked to contact Southampton Town Detective Division at 631-702-2230.

Police had identified Mr. Malak as being a resident of New York, but a family member said he was from Southampton.
