The Southampton boys basketball team was one of the most decorated teams from the South Fork this past winter, and to no surprise. The Mariners, who were recently honored at last week’s Southampton Town Board meeting, won league, county, Long Island and regional titles before reaching the New York State Class B Final Four, where it lost Catholic Central.

Derek Reed was the team’s leading postseason award honoree, leading the way with New York State All-State First Team honors, along with being named to Newsday’s All-Long Island Team, Long Island’s Class B Player of the Year, All-County, All-Division and All-League after being named to Newsday’s Top 100 preseason list. He was also League MVP, the MVP of the Mariner Athletic Club Holiday Tournament and was on the All-Tournament Team of the Kendall Madison Tournament at East Hampton.

Naevon Williams was named to the New York State All-Tournament Team and named All-County, All-Conference, All-Division and All-League. He also earned MVP honors of the Kendall Madison Tournament. Alex Franklin, in his first year on varsity, was named to the All-Tournament Team, All-Conference, All-Division, All-League and League V Rookie of the Year.

Tyler Blake and Tyson Reddick were each named All-League, and Tyrese Reddick earned All-Academic honors. Herm Lamison was named Long Island Class B Coach of the Year, and Ricky Taylor was named JV Coach of the Year.

The Southampton girls basketball team just missed out on qualifying for the playoffs after finishing with a 6-8 League V record (8-12 overall). Daelyn Palmore was named All-Conference and All-League while Juliette Archer and C.C. Ginsberg were each named All-League and Academic All-County. Paige Garvin and Danna Game were also Academic All-County. Amadyah Palmore was given the team’s Unsung Hero Award.

The Southampton wrestling team had an up-and-down season this past winter marred by a few key injuries especially late in the season that kept some of its best wrestlers from competing at the Suffolk County Division II Championships. David Castillo placed third at 285 pounds to become All-County, and head coach Lester Ware said Castillo should be the top-ranked heavyweight going into next season. Cole Fox also placed third at 160 pounds to become All-County and Gabe Lopes placed fourth for his first All-County finish at 152 pounds.

Christian Duggal earned All-County honors during the indoor track season by placing fourth in the boys 600-meter run in which he finished in 1:26.98. The girls 4x200-meter relay team of Jennifer Cruz, Emily Zukosky, Kyla Cerullo and Diamond Brown was league champion, and Kyla Cerullo (55-meter dash), Sloane Edson (high jump) and Jeorgiana Gavalas (1,500-meter race) were each All-League and reached the state qualifier in their respective events.

Southampton also had three of its five winter varsity sports teams earn the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete team award. To earn this recognition, three-quarters of the team’s members were required to hold a GPA above 90 percent. Those teams included both boys and girls indoor track and girls basketball.

Pierson

The Pierson boys basketball team tried its best to reach the New York State Class C Final Four for the second consecutive season but came up just a win shy of doing so after losing to Haldane in the Regional Final. It was nonetheless a very successful campaign for the Whalers who finished with a 13-4 record in Division V play, 13-7 overall.

Luke Seltzer led Pierson on most nights and has the hardware to show for it. He was named All-State Fifth Team, All-Tournament Team, Long Island Class C/D Player of the Year, League X MVP, All-County, All-Conference and All-League. Charlie McLean was an All-State Honorable Mention, named to the All-Tournament Team and also All-Conference and All-League.

Kyle Seltzer was named League X Rookie of the Year. Aven Smith was given the team’s Unsung Hero Award. Dom Mancino was named All-League, and Fritz Desir was All-County Academic. Will Fujita was named League X Coach of the Year. Kevin O’Halloran was named Suffolk County Assistant Coach of the Year, and Jackson Marienfeld was named League X JV Coach of the Year.

The Pierson/Bridgehampton girls basketball team finished one win shy of qualifying for playoffs after going 5-7 in Division V (7-10 overall). Coco Lohmiller shined in her varsity debut season as an eighth-grader, which led to All-Conference and All-League honors. Lyra Aubrey was also All-League, Cali Wilson was named the team’s Unsung Hero and the team’s lone senior, Riley Roesel, was All-County Academic.

The East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton girls indoor track team had a very successful winter season and led the list on postseason honorees.

Leslie Samuel and Ryleigh O’Donnell were both All-County in the long jump and 600-meter run, respectively. Samuel, a Bridgehampton student-athlete, was also All-League in the long jump and 300- and 55-meter dashes. O’Donnell was also All-League in the 4x400-meter relay along with Dylan Cashin, Melina Sarlo and Meredith Spolarich. Cashin was also All-League in the 1,500- and 3,000-meter races. Sarlo was also All-League in the shot put and Spolarich, a Pierson student-athlete who was also Academic All-County, was All-League in the high jump. Clio McCarty was also All-League in the high jump. Samuel was given the team’s MVP Award. Sarlo was given the team’s Most Improved Player Award, and Spolarich was given the Coaches Award.

The East Hampton/Pierson boys swim team finished fourth in League II with a 3-3 record, 5-4 overall, and had a number of student-athletes earn All-League honors at the League II Championships. The 200-yard medley relay team of Nicky Badilla, Rock Hamada, Tenzin Tamang and Owen Robins, the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Tamang, Liam Knight, Luke Tarbet and Emmet McCormac and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Badilla, Robins, Tarbet and Knight were each All-League. Tamang was All-League individually in the 100-yard butterfly, Knight was All-League in the 100-yard freestyle and Badilla, a Pierson student-athlete, was All-League in the 100-yard backstroke.

Bridgehampton

The Bridgehampton boys basketball team won an overtime thriller over Smithtown Christian to win the Suffolk County Class D Championship then lost its regional final game to Chapel Field to finish one win why of reaching the state tournament.

Alex Davis earned All-State Eighth Team honors while also being named to the All-Tournament Team and All-Conference. Jai Feaster was also named to the All-Tournament Team and All-Conference. Sae’Vion Ward was named League X Rookie of the Year and All-League. Dylan Fitzgerald was given the team’s Unsung Hero Award, Scott Vinski was All-Academic and Ron White was named League X Coach of the Year.
