With assistance from the Southampton Village Police K9 unit, Town Police tracked and captured a burglar on Wednesday, September 23. Oscar Mayenorrego, 21, of Riverside, was charged with a felony county of second degree burglary and misdemeanor resisting arrest.
At approximately 1:19 p.m., a 911 call reporting a burglary in progress came in through Life Alert. A resident of the Sag Harbor Turnpike had come home and found an intruder in her home, police said. She activated her medical alert bracelet and advised Life Alert that someone was in the house.
Responding police made contact with Mr. Mayenorrego, who, they say, leapt from a second story window and fled on foot. The responding officer gave chase, and despite being injured, continued the pursuit.
The K9 unit was called in and Officer James Moore and K9 Topper located the suspected burglar. Town Police placed Mr. Mayenorrego under arrest. He was taken to Southampton Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, then to police headquarters in Hampton Bays for processing.
The next morning, he was charged with misdemeanor criminal mischief. Police say he damaged his cell by tearing open his mattress and climbing inside it.
