Car Fire Stalls Westbound Commute On Sunrise Highway Thursday Afternoon

A car fire Thursday afternoon backed rush hour traffic up on Sunrise Highway and Montauk Highway in Southampton. Flames erupted from a Jeep Liberty traveling westbound just east of Flanders Road, Route 24, at 4:01 p.m. closing Sunrise Highway for approximately 20 minutes, according to New York State Police. With the fire brought under control, the left lane was opened after 20 minutes, with both lanes reopened after 30 minutes, according to the Troopers. The owner of Ted’s East End Market on Hampton Road in Southampton Village said Thursday, May 21, he was threatened with “payback” by an irate customer’s mother after he had words with the customer over the state’s mandate to wear a face-covering inside businesses. Tom Anderson said a man who appeared to be around 21 years old entered the store without a mask around 1 p.m. that day. Mastic Beach Man Suspected In String Of Thefts From Parked Cars In Hampton Bays

Southampton Town Police believe they captured a culprit in a string of thefts from parked cars that took place this spring in a Hampton Bays neighborhood. On Friday night at 10:45 p.m. police said they saw Richard J. Kruger, 26, of Mastic Beach, break into a vehicle parked in a driveway near the intersection of Palo Alto Drive and Westerley Court and attempt to steal something, according to a police report. An officer approached Mr. Kruger, and he tried to escape, then fought with officers attempting to apprehend him, police said.
