UPDATE: 2:45 P.M.
Southampton Town Chief Fire Marshal Cheryl Kraft said the fire at the Hayground School started outside one of the classrooms before breaking through a window. She also noted that firefighters were able to salvage most of the computers by removing them from the classroom before extinguishing the flames. No injuries were reported.
Ms. Kraft said the cause of the fire is still being investigated. She also said officials are still looking into what ignited the brush fires in Westhampton and Eastport.
UPDATE: 2:30 P.M.
Students at the Hayground School had returned to the main building after being evacuated on Wednesday afternoon. According to Marcelle Langendal, the faculty chair, the school building housing Jeff’s Kitchen had had a spark outside, but fire did not enter that building or others.
“It’s out now,” Ms. Langendal said at about 2:20 p.m., by which time firefighters had left the premises.
UPDATE: 2:20 P.M.
Students at the Hayground School in Bridgehampton were evacuated from the building after fire damaged a portion of the school, according to witnesses. Fire officials did not immediately return calls seeking additional information.
Firefighters have extinguished a pair of brush fires reported earlier this afternoon along Old Country Road in Westhampton and Eastport Manor Road in Eastport.
The fires, which were both called in between 1 and 2 p.m., charred stretches of brush in both hamlets, according to officials. The Westhampton fire charred the shoulder of Old Country Road, near the train tracks and the Westhampton transfer station.
Westhampton Beach Fire Department officials who responded to the scene said Wednesday’s high winds made battling the flames more difficult.
Volunteers said that the fires in Eastport occurred along the east side of Eastport Manor Road, between Old Country Road and Sunrise Highway. In those instances, flames scorched 150- to 200-foot-long stretches of brush along the road. The Eastport and Center Moriches fire departments responded to that blaze.
