Southampton Superintendent of Schools Nicholas Dyno will retire from the district effective August 30, 2024.
At Tuesday night’s Board of Education meeting, President SunHe Sherwood-Dudley thanked the administrator for his 19 years of service, and opened the floor for comments.
“I’m not happy about it — how ’bout that?” board member Jacqueline Robinson said, eliciting a rumble of soft laughter from district administrators and fellow board members.
Dyno began his career in education in 1985 as a secondary school guidance counselor in the Poughkeepsie City School District. He earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from Berklee College of Music, a master’s degree in counselor education from Marywood University, and a doctorate in educational administration from Dowling College.
In 2005, he was hired as principal of Southampton High School after serving as a principal in the Hampton Bays and Highland Central school districts. Three years later, he advanced to the district’s assistant superintendent for instruction — a new position at the time — before stepping in as interim superintendent in 2016 following the resignation of then-Superintendent Scott Farina. Dyno was appointed superintendent of schools in 2017.
The Board of Education members did not discuss any next steps, including the hiring search, and Dyno was unavailable for comment.
