Canal Lock Repairs Completed, Safe for Boat Traffic Again

Boats are again able to safely transit the Shinnecock Canal this weekend after a county contractor completed repairs to a broken gate in the canal's mechanical lock that had created hazardous conditions since early last month. The U.S. Coast Guard and Southampton Town Marine Patrol said that the lock and tidal gates were again operating normally as of Wednesday, after only about three weeks of disruption. Luis Cruz Chuchuca, 31, of Hampton Bays was arrested at about 4:20 p.m. on September 28 and charged with misdemeanor aggravated DWI after the car he was driving was involved in a collision with another car at Flanders Road and Old Riverhead Road in Hampton Bays.
