Among the most moving words about the novel coronavirus outbreak were those of Governor Andrew Cuomo to National Guard troops involved in converting the Javits Center into a hospital for coronavirus patients. “You are living a moment in history,” said Mr. Cuomo. “This is a moment that is going to change this nation. This is a moment that forges character, forges people, changes people — makes them stronger, makes them weaker. “Ten years from now, you will be talking about today to your children, and your children and you will shed a tear, because you will remember the lives lost ... by Staff Writer
The skein of language is stretched thin attempting to define a microscopic, unknown, fast-replicating lethal virus and how to bring it under control — the science and mathematics are separate and distinct languages, undecipherable in ordinary speech. And so, the anthropomorphic–metaphoric leaps take over, as in Governor Andrew Cuomo’s challenge to “kick coronavirus ass.” All well and good; however, the only ass on this virus is Donald J. Trump. And we have a very long wait in virus-time before we kick him out in November. It will be left to science and mathematics to calculate how many people died as ... by Staff Writer
To all of my friends in the medical profession: I am thinking about you all of the time during this crisis. When things are good, the politicians shine. When things get bad, the firefighters and police officers step up ... by Staff Writer

However, there’s no accounting for the behavior of shoppers at Herrick’s. The other day, after buying some essential cleaning products, and wearing a homemade mask while waiting for the arrival, or non-arrival, of the masks I ordered and paid for on the internet, I was ready to leave through the front door, accompanied by one of Herrick’s helpful (and masked) salesmen. Just inside that narrow entrance leading to the front door stood a middle-aged local man, without ... by Staff Writer
There are heroes working here on the East End. I am talking about the doctors and nurses at Peconic Bay Medical Center. With the novel coronavirus pandemic upon us, these health care professionals are beginning to receive some of the attention and adulation they deserve. However, after my wife’s recent stay at PBMC, I already knew what dedicated, knowledgeable and caring people work at our local hospital. My wife was rushed to PBMC a few weeks ago with a severe infection, which resulted in a four-day stay in the intensive care unit, where the doctors and nurses literally saved her ... by Staff Writer
