A Southampton Town Police officer was injured and hospitalized Monday night, July 24, after a car left in gear rolled into him during a traffic stop on Flanders Road in Flanders.
Nicholas Fisher, 37, of Riverhead was pulled over, police said, for a broken taillight. When police tried to initiate the stop, Fisher reportedly fled onto Evergreen Street and then onto Priscilla Avenue, where police said he left the vehicle and fled the scene.
The vehicle that Fisher was driving was not placed in “park,” and the car rolled backward, striking a parked vehicle, a police cruiser and the police officer, police said. The officer was not identified.
Fisher was chased down and arrested soon thereafter and charged with assault in the second degree, a felony, and second-degree obstructing government administration, a misdemeanor.
“The officer was treated and released from the hospital,” said Lieutenant Todd Spencer, via email. “We are waiting on a follow-up appointment to see the full extent of injuries. He has not been back to work yet since the incident.”
The felony assault charge, Spencer said, “is the result of the subject’s actions in causing the vehicle to strike and injure the officer.”
