The Southampton Town Trustees will hold a special night meeting in Flanders next week as part of a community outreach initiative.
The meeting will be held at the David W. Crohan Community Center on Flanders Road on Tuesday, December 18, at 6 p.m., and will allow members of the community to speak out and listen to issues directly affecting them in their neighborhoods.
“We decided it would be a nice thing to have a few meetings in the community,” Southampton Town Trustee Scott Horowitz said on Monday. “It’s good to listen to people … to see how we can help them.”
Mr. Horowitz said Flanders and Riverside residents have expressed concerns about sea level rise impacting their community. Along with those concerns, the Trustees will be prepared to discuss other projects, including permeable reactive barriers, living shorelines and the fish ladders and alewives, which affect Wildwood Lake.
Trustee Ann Welker asked board members about having night meetings to allow those in the community who cannot attend normally scheduled daytime meetings the opportunity to speak up about Trustee-related issues in a meeting setting. She did not respond to questions on Monday regarding the night meeting.
The meeting, and other night meetings going forward, will be held separate from the regular Trustees meetings that are held during the day.
Mr. Horowitz said it was important to keep the two separate. Daytime meetings are ideal for permit approvals and the business side of things, he explained, because those involved plan their days around the hearings, well in advance.
The meeting is open to anyone in the community.
