Southampton Village officials have approved a drainage project on Hampton Road that will reduce the number of large puddles in a village parking lot.
At a Village Board work session on Tuesday night, trustees approved the project, 4-0, with Trustee Richard Yastrzemski arriving late and missing the vote. It will be funded by Hampton Road Realty, the owner of a soon-to-be Citarella market in Southampton Village, which will be next to the parking lot.
Officials explained that water currently drains off the roof of the building and into the parking lot, pooling in certain parking spaces and causing a potentially dangerous situation in winter when it freezes over.
Catch basins will be installed in the parking lot to eliminate the pooling and reduce the number of potholes.
“This is an opportunity for us to put catch basins in the parking lot at the expense of the adjacent property,” Village Mayor Mark Epley said. “This is a very good thing for the village from a safety standpoint.”
