The Sagaponack School Board will hold a special election on Tuesday, April 12, to fill the seat of Charles Barbour, the board’s current president, who announced his resignation from the board earlier this month.
Mr. Barbour, who will continue serving until the end of the month, has sold his Sagaponack house and is moving out of the state. He said this week that two people have expressed interest in replacing him, Christina Riley and Kathy Hatgistavrou.
Those interested in seeking the post must file their candidate petitions by Monday, March 14. Petitions must be signed by at least 25 residents of the Sagaponack School District and delivered to the district clerk’s office before next month’s deadline.
The new board member will complete Mr. Barbour’s unfinished term, which expires in June 2013, and would then be eligible to seek a full three-year term on the board.
The three-member School Board resolved at its February 8 meeting to schedule the special election at the Sagaponack School House on Sagg Main Street for 7:30 p.m. on April 12, preceding the board’s regular monthly meeting. The winner will be immediately sworn in and take his or her place on the board for that evening’s meeting.
The board will hold its next meeting as scheduled on Tuesday, March 8, with just two board members, Joseph Louchheim and Fred Wilford.
District residents may request absentee ballots from the district clerk by submitting a ballot application at least seven days before the election.
Mr. Barbour has been on the Sagaponack School Board for 12 years, serving as its president since 2005.
