I'm a southerner that used to only summer here on Long Island until the 1990s
when I became a year-round resident. You might find me at night with the aid of a flashlight
but good luck trying to catch me! Even though I move sideways
I can fly across the beach with my eight legs. MIKE BOTTINI
I'm the largest gull in the world
a northern species that until the early 1900s only nested on the coasts of Quebec
Labrador
Newfoundland and the Canadian maritimes. Food in open landfills enabled us to move south. My ancestors first started nesting in New York on Cartwright Island in 1942. MIKE BOTTINI
As with my larger relative mentioned in question #1
I'm northern nester and only relatively recently expanded my nesting range south to include Long Island. My kin first nested here at Orient on the north fork in 1931. I've learned to exploit a very lucrative niche on the beach: when beach visitors jump in the water for a swim
