The Hampton Bays baseball team picked up its first League VIII victory of the season on Monday with a 5-3 win at rival Southampton.

Hampton Bays senior Ben Frost started on the mound for the Baymen and pitched well for the most part, allowing one hit, but he did walk six batters and hit a batter. He pitched the first three and a third innings and then gave the ball to junior Justin Carbone, who went the rest of the way. Carbone came into the game in the fourth inning with the Baymen trailing the Mariners 2-0, and even though he walked four and hit two batters, he also allowed only one hit.

Hampton Bays made its comeback in the fifth inning. After an RBI single by senior Perry Friscia, sophomore Ryan Schultheis singled into the outfield to drive in a run, and on a misplayed ball by Southampton’s outfield, Hampton Bays scored again to make it 4-2.

Southampton scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to make it a one-run game but Schultheis came through with another RBI single in the top of the seventh inning to give the Baymen some breathing room.

Schultheis finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs while sophomore Ryan Cavanaugh, in his first varsity game, went 2 for 3 with two runs scored.

“The key to the game was that we gave Southampton 13 free base runners but they left 13 runners on base,” Hampton Bays head coach Pete Meehan said. “We got the big outs when we needed them.”

Westhampton Beach Baseball

The Hurricanes lost their first League VI game of the season, 13-2, at home to Sayville on Monday. Westhampton Beach had a hard time figuring out Sayville starting pitcher Ryan Aloise, who gave up one earned run on three hits and struck out 10 in five innings.

Westhampton Beach Softball

The Lady Hurricanes lost their first League VI game of the season as well, 8-3, to East Hampton on Monday.

ESM Baseball

The Sharks used a nine-run second inning en route to a 17-1 victory at Comsewogue on Monday in League V action.

Logan Frati pitched a complete game and gave up one run on six hits and one walk. He struck out eight.

But it was the offense that propelled ESM to the victory. Andrew Karkota, in the leadoff spot, went 3 for 4 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs. ESM’s designated hitter, Billy Goncalves, went 3 for 4 with a double, two runs and three RBIs. Anthony Annunziata went 3 for 5 with an RBI and Mike Flynn went 3 for 5 with two RBIs.

ESM Boys Tennis

The Sharks picked up their first League VII victory of the season, defeating Shoreham/Wading River 5-2 at home on Monday.

ESM eighth-grader Alex Reiley picked up a 6-1, 7-5 win over Shoreham’s Tom Stridiron at second singles. Senior Shark Erik Blohmke won in three sets 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 over Shoreham’s Tyler Yasknich at third singles.

ESM swept all three doubles matches. At first doubles, juniors Brandon Calderone and Connor Brandow won 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 over Wildcats Nick and Ryan West. Senior Brian Weiser and sophomore Trevor Halye defeated Shoreham’s Gary Houck and Drew Rossin 6-1, 6-4 at second doubles. And the third doubles tandem of juniors David Wright and B.J. Anderson won 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 over Wildcats Nick Aruzjo and Charlie Demeo.
