On the green Thursday afternoon while his team was practicing before a match against Greenport/Southold, Eastport South Manor golf head coach Todd Skala said that it will be his team and Mattituck battling it out for the League VII title this season and a quick glance at the standings would back that up.
The Sharks, who are in second place with a 3-1 record, are right behind Mattituck who has yet to be defeated in four matches this season. The teams played each other on September 16 and the Tuckers grabbed the win 6.5-2.5 at North Fork. Both teams will battle it out again on October 8 at Hampton Hills.
In more recent matches, ESM won handily, 7.5-1.5 against Hampton Bays at Hampton Hills on September 21 and then 7-2 the following day against Riverhead again at Hampton Hills. The match that was supposed to be held on Thursday afternoon against Greenport/Southold was postponed. Both teams were scheduled to play each other on Tuesday at Islands End and Wednesday at Hampton Hills.
Shelter Island, as of Tuesday morning, stands in third place behind ESM with a 2-1 record.
Against Hampton Bays, the Sharks totaled 214 points to the Baymen’s 238. ESM’s number one, Keith Zorn, and number six, Jake Vizzi, both shot a 43, the lowest scores on the day for the Sharks. Hampton Bays’ number one, Conor Press, shot the lowest score with a 39. Two new players to ESM this season coming up from the junior varsity, Trevor Jones, who was playing at the four spot against Hampton Bays, and Tony Bonsignore, who was playing in the fifth spot, did well shooting six over the par-41.
In the win over Riverhead, ESM scored 225 points to the Blue Waves 232. Zorn shot the lowest score again for ESM with a 41, but he was once again beaten by Riverhead’s number one, who shot a 39. ESM’s Adam Abbate shot a 42 on the day and won his match.
