As the ongoing updates appear related to discussions regarding the Shinnecock Nation’s construction projects, I can only grimace when I hear the words: The talks were cordial.
It became clear, as the Shinnecock constructed the 60-foot electronic billboards right next to Route 27, that they had little to no interest in the concept of rural blight or being a good neighbor.
Having driven that route for over 50 years, I can’t fathom why the town has rolled over and allowed such a hideous project be placed among the rural landscape around it. Yes, I know the concept of sovereign nation, but I also know that they will continue to steamroll their gas station project ahead, then their hotel and convention center, and more.
I implore the town to stand up in the face of “we don’t care, we are moving ahead” and take the steps necessary to limit further rural blight.

I read with deep attention to detail the almost full-page story on the lack of parking during the busy summer months in Westhampton Beach [“Westhampton Beach Village Board Exploring Paid Parking Options,” 27east.com, November 10]. I did note, happily, that...

I’m not typically keen on dueling Letters to the Editor, but in my best Inigo Montoya voice, my response to Highway Superintendent Charles McArdle is: “I did not say what you think I said” [“Oversight Failure,” Letters, November 13]. Let...
At the end of the Southampton Village Board’s November 13 meeting, Mayor Bill Manger announced that he wants to use taxpayer money to build a village “app” listing local sites, such as the World War I monument and the First...
Scourge: a person or thing that causes great suffering, affliction or misery. The latest from our local government is that they’re not going to ban gas-powered leaf blowers, because they can’t enforce the law. This is backward thinking. First comes...
Southampton Village is currently considering an important zoning amendment designed to improve traffic conditions and promote more efficient transportation planning. Under the proposed code, every permit application will be required to include a detailed transportation plan, including the number of...
