Stanley T. Strong Jr. of Hampton Bays, and formerly of Sagaponack, died on November 4 at Southampton Hospital. He was 86.
Born October 30, 1923, to Stanley Sr. and Gertrude Mason Strong, he was raised in Wainscott, where he lived until he was drafted into the U.S. Navy in 1944, during World War II. He served until 1946 as a machinist’s mate third class in Guam, earning the American Theatre Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal, and the Victory Medal.
Upon his discharge, he went to work on his family’s potato farm. When the business closed in the late 1970s, he went to work for Charles and David Osborn in Wainscott until he retired. Survivors said this week that growing potatoes and vegetables was in his blood.
Mr. Strong is survived by two sons, Stanley III and his wife Debbie of Hampton Bays and Thomas and his wife Nina of East Hampton; six grandchildren, James of East Quogue, Kyle and his wife Adela of East Quogue, Lisa and her boyfriend Taobi of Hampton Bays, Thomas Jr. and his wife Jeanie of East Hampton, Stanley IV and his wife Kim of Virginia, and Britni of the Cayman Islands.
He is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Kayla, Kyle Jr. and Jake; two brothers, Doug and his wife Lorrine of North Carolina and Carlton and his wife Gloria of Wainscott; one niece and five nephews.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Brockett Funeral Home. Interment was November 10 at Calverton National Cemetery.
