Shelter Island School District and Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program have teamed up to launch the “Seahorse Hotel Project,” an experiential learning initiative focused on marine conservation. The Northern Lined Seahorse is native to Eastern Long Island but its population is declining due to loss of habitat. In an interactive workshop, taught to the students late in May, they learned about the life cycle and behavior of the seahorse before working together to construct a “Seahorse Hotel” artificial habitat. These hotels will then be deployed in local waters and utilized in CCE’s new seahorse restoration and monitoring efforts.
