Supreme Hubris

Diana Ross and the Supremes were one of the most successful female singing groups of all time back in the 1960s. They had many hit songs, including “Stop! In the Name of Love.”

I dare say that very few people, except Donald Trump and his sycophants, would consider this U.S. Supreme Court of being “supreme.” I would say: Stop! In the Name of Democracy.

The current Supreme Court is openly and arrogantly acting like a wing of Trump’s Republican Party.

Frequently, I find myself cringing at the overt behavior of several members of the Supreme Court, especially Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito. They are both blatantly partisan in the extreme. This John Roberts-led Supreme Court is openly pimping for Donald Trump in broad daylight; it’s quite a spectacle. Perhaps you could call it “supreme hubris.”

I guess we have to hand it to Donald Trump for his success in denigrating Americans’ opinion of the Supreme Court by stacking it with three extreme right-wing members who defy the opinions of most Americans. Of course, he had a big helping hand from Mitch McConnell, who refused to even give President Barack Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, a hearing — after all, it was the last year of Obama’s presidency. Yet, McConnell pushed through Trump’s nominee, Amy Coney Barrett, in the last several days prior to the 2020 election.

You would think that John Roberts, as the chief justice, would care that he is careening toward a very tarnished legacy for his failure to steer the court in a nonpartisan fashion. Sadly, his court is acting, all too often, in concert with an extreme right-wing ideology in defiance of the will of the majority of the American people.

Perhaps, at the 11th hour, this Supreme Court will stop aiding Trump’s delay tactics. They still have the ability to act swiftly and ensure that Trump is tried for his role in the shameful January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. The American people deserve to have this case heard before the election. And we need to affirm that no man is above the law.

Like every American citizen, Donald Trump deserves a fair and speedy trial. Of course, that’s the last thing he wants. He hopes that his delay tactics will run out the clock.

The clock is ticking on the Supreme Court’s integrity. I’m hoping that the “Supremes” pull off a win before it’s too late.
